The Missing Scarf

Another wonderful piece by Eoin Duffy. A great short story, perfect narration and a masterclass in minimalist design, animation and motion graphics.

Given that they can otherwise be rather hard to track down, it’s always delightful when an award-winning short pops up online for free. The latest to do so is The Missing Scarf by Irish filmmaker Eoin Duffy. In addition to winning a slew of awards at various animation festivals, the film was shortlisted for the 86th Annual Academy Awards.

It’s best to go in not knowing too much about The Missing Scarf other than that it’s a charming animated tale of a squirrel looking for a scarf and assuaging the ever-building fears of his animal friends. Narrated by a well-used George Takei, the short starts out with charm akin to Paperman before building into something more surprising over the course of its less than seven minute runtime.
